Minca sits at roughly 650 m above sea level in the foothills of the Sierra Nevada de Santa Marta, noticeably cooler and greener than the coast below. Its slopes have long supported small farms growing coffee and cacao, which is why a single day here can run from picking and processing to tasting chocolate.
The Sierra Nevada itself is a recognized UNESCO Biosphere Reserve (designated 1979) and the homeland of Indigenous peoples including the Kogi, Arhuaco, Wiwa and Kankuamo. The Arhuaco in particular are known for cacao and coffee grown in the range, a reminder that the crops you taste in Minca belong to a much older relationship between these mountains and the people who live in them.
The waterfall hike is the active part of the day. Pools in the Minca area are fed by Sierra Nevada streams, so expect cool, clear water and bring swimwear if you want a dip.
