The Milwaukee Riverwalk's story is partly one of cleanup. In 1982 the city came under a federal court order to end sewage overflows, which led to a decade-long, billions-of-dollars pollution abatement project, and the first riverwalk sections were designed in the early 1990s. The Riverwalk system began in 1993, with the downtown stretch of about eight blocks largely complete by 1997.
It now runs about 3.1 miles along both sides of the Milwaukee River, from the site of the former North Avenue Dam, through downtown and the Historic Third Ward to Lake Michigan, so the walk takes in modern art as well as the converted warehouses of the Third Ward.
The Third Ward itself was rebuilt after a great fire on October 28, 1892 destroyed about 440 buildings, which explains the district's uniform brick-and-iron character that the walk passes through.
