Milwaukee offers three very different photographic backdrops within a short distance of each other. The Milwaukee Art Museum's Quadracci Pavilion, completed in October 2001 to a Santiago Calatrava design, is the headline image; its wing-like Burke Brise Soleil spreads about 217 feet when open in daylight, and the building was named Time magazine's best design of 2001.
The Historic Third Ward offers warehouse-district texture. A fire that began on October 28, 1892 destroyed about 440 buildings in the district, and the neighbourhood was rebuilt in brick and cast iron, which is why its streets look as they do today.
The Lake Michigan shoreline gives open sky and water. Lakeshore State Park, Wisconsin's only urban state park, is a 22-acre park of restored prairie and pebble beach beside downtown, so a session can move from skyline to nature in a few minutes.
