Few cities reward an aerial view like Milwaukee, because its best-known landmarks sit in a tight cluster along Lake Michigan. The Milwaukee Art Museum's Quadracci Pavilion, designed by Santiago Calatrava and completed in October 2001, is the star: its Burke Brise Soleil is a moveable, wing-like sunscreen of 72 steel fins that opens to a wingspan of about 217 feet in daylight. From above, you see the full sweep of the wings that is impossible to take in from the ground.
A little inland you pass Fiserv Forum, which opened on August 26, 2018 as the home of the Milwaukee Bucks and holds just over 17,000 for basketball. Further along the Menomonee Valley, the Harley-Davidson Museum, which opened to the public on July 12, 2008, occupies a roughly 20-acre site, and the flight gives a sense of how the city's industrial valley connects to the lakefront downtown.
Because the flight is short, the real value is orientation: you leave with a mental map of where the lakefront, Veterans Park, the arena and the museum sit in relation to each other, which makes the rest of a Milwaukee visit easier to plan.
