This is a private tour — everything is scheduled around your own group, with no other travelers along for the tastings. Milwaukee's nickname 'Cream City' comes from the pale yellow brick made from local clay in the Menomonee River Valley; the clay's lime and sulfur content turns the bricks cream-coloured when fired, and the material built much of the city in the mid and late 19th century. That same era's German immigrants shaped its brewing and food culture, which is the thread this tasting walk follows.
The downtown skywalk system that the route uses is modest in length, about 1.75 miles of elevated walkways linking buildings across roughly eight city blocks. It exists mainly for winter and rain, and walking part of it gives you a feel for how locals move around downtown when Lake Michigan weather turns harsh.
Cheese and beer are not just tourist themes here: Wisconsin's dairy tradition and Milwaukee's brewing history grew up side by side, and pairing them on a tasting route is the most natural way to understand why the city built its reputation as Brew City.
