The Historic Third Ward's darkest chapter is real history. On October 28, 1892 a fire that began at the Union Oil & Paint Co. building, fed by winds of up to about 50 mph, spread through the district; about 440 buildings were destroyed and more than 1,900 people, mostly Irish-American families, were left homeless. It is among the most devastating fires in Milwaukee's history, and the stories told on this tour are rooted in that loss.
The Pfister Hotel, which opened in 1893 and was designed by Henry C. Koch in Romanesque Revival style, is where the tour ends. Guido Pfister died during its construction, and his son Charles saw it through to completion; popular local legend says Charles still watches over the hotel, though that is a ghost story and not documented fact. The hotel is also known for a large Victorian art collection.
The Milwaukee Public Market, where the tour begins, opened in October 2005 inside the Third Ward at 400 N. Water Street, so the district's old warehouse brick and its modern food hall sit side by side.
