The Pyramid of the Magician is one of the strangest-shaped structures in the Maya world: rather than the straight-edged, stepped silhouette typical of Maya pyramids, it has rounded corners and an elliptical base that give it an almost oval profile from above. That shape is the result of how it was built — in roughly five phases spread across several centuries, with each new temple constructed directly over the last rather than demolishing it first. Archaeologists have located five distinct temple structures nested inside the finished pyramid, and the earliest version of the building wasn't a pyramid at all, but a lower, range-type palace that was built up and over repeatedly until it reached its current height.
The vehicle itself threads through the grounds of the former Hacienda Uxmal, a property built directly in front of the ruins that, by the 19th and 20th centuries, had become a base for the archaeologists and explorers working to excavate and restore the site — a role the property still nods to today as a historic hotel and small museum sharing its grounds with the same jungle and limestone outcrops the pyramid rises from. As with other haciendas across the region, the estate's working history was tied to the Yucatán's henequen industry, a trade that relied on debt-bound Maya labor rather than the leisurely plantation imagery hacienda tourism can sometimes suggest.
Breakfast comes from a different, warmer tradition: a Mayan brunch hosted by Doña Mirna and Victor in a traditional Mayan house, where ancestral cooking techniques are explained as the meal is prepared and shared — a real, hosted meal rather than a staged photo opportunity, grounding the morning's safari-style novelty in something genuinely local.
