Because this walking tour has no locked-in route, it works especially well for a city built in layers the way Mérida is. The Spanish conquistador Francisco de Montejo the Younger founded Mérida on January 6, 1542, laying the new city directly over T'hó (also written Ichcaanzihó), a Maya settlement that had stood for centuries around five large Preclassic and Classic-era pyramids. Your guide can shape the walk around that layered history, around the city's later colonial grandeur, or around whatever else catches your interest — the point of a customizable tour is that the itinerary serves you, not a fixed script.
If you have no strong preference, most private guides anchor the walk around Plaza Grande, the city's central square, framed by the Catedral de San Ildefonso. Construction on the cathedral began in 1561 and the first phase finished in 1598, using limestone blocks reportedly taken from T'hó's dismantled Maya temples — it's often cited as the oldest cathedral on the mainland of the Americas, predated only by the cathedral in Santo Domingo, which sits on the island of Hispaniola rather than the continent.
Teatro Peón Contreras, one of the possible stops on this flexible route, is worth knowing about before you go: the Beaux-Arts theater was built between 1900 and 1908 during Mérida's henequen-fiber boom, but it has been closed for restoration since a fire damaged its dome and interior in November 2022, with reopening not expected until late 2027. Your guide can still walk you past its grand facade and explain its history — just don't expect to step inside for now.
