Zuccardi's Piedra Infinita estate sits in Paraje Altamira, part of the Uco Valley, on a site covered in stones and rich in limestone that's become internationally recognized as one of Argentina's standout terroirs — the name itself translates to "infinite stone," a nod to the shallow, calcium-carbonate-covered ground the vines grow in at around 1,100 metres above sea level. Rather than relying on new French oak, Zuccardi ferments its wines here in custom concrete vessels using native yeasts, a technique the family has become known for, aimed at preserving the fruit's purity and letting that limestone-driven character come through in the glass. The winery building itself, inaugurated in 2016, is built from local stone, sand, and concrete specifically to echo the surrounding Andean landscape.
Bodega Salentein, where this tour's lunch is served, has a very different origin story: it was founded in 1996 by Dutch entrepreneur Mijndert Pon, who planted the Uco Valley's first high-altitude Malbec the following year at 1,300 metres. The estate's cross-shaped main building, inspired by Andean architecture, uses a gravity-fed winemaking process that has drawn international attention in its own right, and since 2006 the property has also housed Killka, an art space pairing Argentine contemporary artists like Antonio Seguí and Marta Minujín with Dutch modernists such as Karel Appel — a genuinely unusual pairing of wine and art for a working Mendoza winery.
Both estates represent the same broader shift that's reshaped Mendoza wine since the 1990s: moving plantings up into the Uco Valley's higher, cooler terrain in search of the structure and aromatic lift that altitude gives Malbec, rather than relying solely on the warmer, lower vineyards closer to Mendoza city that defined the region for most of the 20th century. Spending a full day at two of the wineries most associated with that shift — one Argentine, one Dutch-founded — gives a real sense of how differently that same high-altitude philosophy can be expressed.
