The real draw of the Uco Valley over Mendoza's older wine districts is altitude: vineyards here sit roughly between 900 and 1,400 metres above sea level, noticeably higher than the 800 to 1,100 metres typical of Luján de Cuyo closer to the city. At these elevations the swing between daytime heat and overnight cold regularly exceeds 20°C, and that stress is what gives Uco Valley Malbec its reputation for structure, violet aromatics, and a mineral edge — a leaner, more vertical style than the fuller-bodied, softer-tannined Malbec that Luján de Cuyo's slightly lower, warmer vineyards tend to produce. Because this tour lets you choose your own stops rather than following a fixed route, you can actually feel that altitude difference across a single afternoon by visiting wineries at different points in the valley.
The real wineries on offer span a genuine range of scale and philosophy. Monteviejo, for instance, was the first estate built in 2001 as part of Clos de los Siete, the Vista Flores project that French winemaking consultant Michel Rolland and a group of Bordeaux partners began planting in 1999 at around 1,100 metres — each participating winery, including Monteviejo under the Péré Vergé-Parent family, contributes grapes to a shared blended wine alongside producing its own label. Domaine Bousquet, by contrast, built its reputation on certified organic farming in the valley, while Salentein and Atamisque each bring their own distinct architecture and hospitality style to the same high-altitude terrain.
Because your driver isn't locked into a set schedule, you can tell your guide in advance whether you'd rather spend the day at one or two larger, more established names or mix in a smaller biodynamic producer — the flexibility is real, not just marketing language, since the day's actual stops are built around your stated preferences for winery size, farming philosophy, and the kind of food pairing you want at lunch.
