Trapiche is one of the oldest names in Argentine wine. It traces back to 1883, when Tiburcio Benegas bought a Mendoza property that already held a small vineyard and named it El Trapiche. After Benegas died in 1908, his son Pedro took over as chief winemaker and began developing new wines under the family label, including Fond de Cave and Broquel, names that are still part of Trapiche's range today. In 1971, ownership passed from the Benegas family to the Pulenta family, who renamed the company Peñaflor S.A. — the same family whose later, separate ventures, Pulenta Estate and Vistalba, also appear elsewhere in Mendoza's wine-tour scene. Trapiche has since grown into one of Argentina's largest and most internationally awarded wine producers, a two-time winner of the International Wine and Spirit Competition's Argentine Wine Producer of the Year award.
The tour pairs that history with a second well-regarded Mendoza winery before settling into a three-course lunch, paired with regional wines and homemade olive oils — a reminder that Maipú's gravel soils and warm climate were built for more than grapes.
The olive oil mill visit closes out the day with a look at how that second crop gets made, from harvest through pressing, in a department of Mendoza that's been cultivating both vines and olive trees since Italian and Spanish immigrant families first settled the area in the 19th century.
