The two regions this tour draws from aren't interchangeable — they're genuinely different chapters of Mendoza wine history. Maipú, just south of Mendoza city, is widely regarded as the birthplace of organized Argentine viticulture, with vines grown in the area for centuries and European varieties planted at scale from the mid-19th century by waves of Italian and Spanish immigrants. Several of the houses founded in that era are still operating today — Trapiche dates to 1883, Bodega La Rural was founded by Felipe Rutini in 1885, and Familia Zuccardi traces its roots in the department back to 1963.
Luján de Cuyo tells a more recent, but equally official, story: in 1993, it became Argentina's first formally recognized wine appellation, a designation acknowledged internationally by the International Organisation of Vine and Wine. Its vineyards commonly sit above 1,000 meters, on sandy, alluvial soil over clay, conditions that have made it the region most closely associated with serious Malbec — hence its nickname, the "Land of Malbec."
The Premium category pulls from a different tier entirely, including Bodega El Enemigo, the 2007 project from winemaker Alejandro Vigil and historian Adrianna Catena, and Bodega Susana Balbo, founded by Argentina's first female oenologist after she spent nine years redefining Torrontés in Salta before returning to Mendoza. Choosing between the three categories — Maipú, Luján de Cuyo, or Premium — is really choosing which era and altitude of Mendoza wine you want to taste, all within a single private half-day.
That shorter format is itself the point for many travelers: a real guided tour and tasting at two wineries, without committing a full day to transfers and extended lunches — useful if Mendoza is one stop on a longer Argentina itinerary rather than the only reason for the visit.
