Susana Balbo made history in 1981 as the first woman in Argentina to graduate with a degree in oenology — and then had to fight for the chance to use it. Unable to find work near Mendoza, she took a job 1,000 kilometers away in Cafayate, in Salta province, at the Michel Torino winery, where over nine years she helped redefine Torrontés, turning it from an ordinary table wine into Argentina's distinctive high-altitude white. She returned to Mendoza in 1991 with a mandate to shake up how the region made wine, and in 1999 launched her own label, which grew into Susana Balbo Wines — today run alongside her daughter, Ana Lovaglio Balbo.
Pulenta Estate carries its own family thread. It was founded in 2002 by brothers Hugo and Eduardo Pulenta, third generation of a family whose Argentine winemaking roots go back to 1902, when Angelo Pulenta and Palma Spinsanti left Italy and settled in Mendoza. The estate's wines draw from Finca La Zulema, a vineyard in Agrelo, Luján de Cuyo, planted in 1992 by the brothers' father, Don Antonio Pulenta, at roughly 1,000 meters of elevation — the same altitude that defines much of Luján de Cuyo's reputation for Malbec.
The day pairs a tour and tasting through Pulenta Estate's vineyards and winery with a lunch at Bodega Susana Balbo, the wines poured specifically to match the food rather than tasted on their own — two distinct Mendoza winemaking stories, told back to back in a single private day.
