Potrerillos is built around a real, fairly young piece of infrastructure: a 116-meter-high dam completed in 2003 on the Mendoza River, backing up a reservoir roughly 12 kilometers long and covering about 1,300 hectares in a valley in the Precordillera foothills west of Mendoza city. Beyond flood control and irrigation water for the valley below, the dam feeds hydroelectric plants at Cacheuta and Alvarez Condarco with a combined capacity of more than 180 megawatts. Downstream, the Mendoza River is fed by snowmelt from the high Andes, and it's this stretch of river — running through Potrerillos — that supplies the whitewater used for rafting here, generally rated Class II to III depending on the season and water flow, manageable for first-timers under guide supervision.
Bodega Dante Robino, the lunch stop, has its own real immigrant-founder story. Dante Robino was born in 1895 in northern Italy and first sold his own wine out of the basement of a restaurant he ran in Buenos Aires before relocating the operation to Mendoza, where the winery was effectively established by 1920 and formally incorporated as a company in 1958. For decades it focused on sparkling wines and Italian varietals he brought over from his home region, like Nebbiolo and Gamba di Pernice, alongside the Malbec more associated with Mendoza today. In March 2020, Dante Robino became the first Mendoza winery acquired by AB InBev, the world's largest brewer — a genuinely unusual turn for a century-old family bodega.
Pairing a real stretch of the Mendoza River below one of the province's biggest dams with a three-course lunch at a winery with this kind of history gives the day two distinct Mendoza stories in one trip — regional hydroelectric engineering and adrenaline on one half, a century of Italian-Argentine winemaking on the other — with your private driver handling every transfer between them.
