The Precordillera is a real and well-defined feature of the region's geography, not just a marketing term — it's a range of foothill mountains running through Mendoza, San Juan, and La Rioja provinces, sitting in front of (and geologically distinct from) the far higher Cordillera Frontal and the main Andean crest further west. Around Mendoza these foothills commonly reach somewhere between 1,500 and 3,000 meters, which puts a launch point here well above the city while staying well below the snow-capped peaks of the high Andes beyond it — exactly the kind of terrain that produces the reliable thermal lift paragliding pilots look for.
Mendoza has a genuine, long-running paragliding scene built around a handful of launch ridges in this foothill belt; the best known is Cerro Arco, with a ramp sitting at roughly 1,650 meters above sea level and reached by 4x4 vehicle, though exact launch points vary by operator and wind conditions on the day. Flights are flown tandem with a licensed instructor rather than solo, so there's no prior paragliding experience required — you're strapped in alongside someone certified to fly the route, not learning to pilot the wing yourself.
A typical tandem flight in this area runs somewhere in the 15-to-25-minute range once airborne, though that varies with the day's wind and thermal activity, and some operators offer longer, thermal-assisted flights that run closer to 40 minutes or more. Either way, the appeal is the same: a one-on-one flight with sweeping views back over the city of Mendoza, out across the pre-Andes foothills you've just launched from, and toward the higher Andes on the horizon.
