Bodega Tierras Altas opened in 1999 as one of Mendoza's first boutique wineries, built and still run by the Vargas Arizu family — part of the broader Arizu family, often described as among the founders of Argentine viticulture, with four generations now having worked the same vineyards in Luján de Cuyo. That boutique scale is exactly what this shorter tasting experience is built around: rather than the large production facilities typical of Mendoza's bigger export-focused wineries, Tierras Altas keeps its cellar and tank room small enough that a focused visit can actually get you up close to the tanks and barrels themselves.
The estate produces Malbec, Cabernet Sauvignon, and a Malbec rosé from its own high-altitude vineyards, where the region's continental climate and alluvial soils give the wines their character — and, alongside the wine, Tierras Altas also makes a range of extra virgin olive oils, a reminder that Luján de Cuyo's agricultural tradition has long combined grapevines with olive groves rather than treating wine as the area's only crop.
Because this is a focused, roughly 90-minute visit rather than a full-day program, the tasting goes beyond the finished bottle — you'll sample Malbec drawn directly from steel fermentation tanks and oak barrels at different stages of aging, a chance to taste the same wine mid-process that's harder to arrange at a winery built around large-scale bottling and shipping.
