The hillside monument at Cerro de la Gloria, inside San Martin Park, is one of Mendoza's most recognizable sights from a distance — a 16-meter bronze sculptural complex unveiled on February 12, 1914, timed to the anniversary of the Battle of Chacabuco. It's the work of Uruguayan sculptor Juan Manuel Ferrari together with several Argentine collaborators, and it commemorates the Army of the Andes, the force General Jose de San Martin assembled and trained in Mendoza province before leading it over the mountains in 1817 to help win Chile's independence from Spain. At the top stands an allegorical figure of Liberty with broken chains above an equestrian statue of San Martin himself, with bronze friezes around the monument's base narrating the campaign.
The day's other city stop, Mendoza's City Hall, sits among the plazas and avenues that make up the heart of the modern city center, and your local guide uses both it and the monument to walk through the city's broader civic and military history before the focus shifts for the afternoon. San Martin Park itself — close to 400 hectares of lakes, wooded paths, and more than 30 sculptures dating back to the 1890s — forms the backdrop to Cerro de la Gloria and is one of the largest urban parks in South America by area.
In the afternoon, the day moves from history to wine. Mendoza produces the large majority of Argentina's wine and is the region most closely associated worldwide with Malbec, so an afternoon winery visit with a guided tasting and lunch is a genuine extension of the area's identity rather than an unrelated add-on — a practical way to get both the city's history and its wine country into a single first day in Mendoza.
