Bodega Antigal takes its name from a Creole word meaning roughly "a very old place," and the site earns it honestly: the winery sits on a property in Russell, Maipú, whose origins trace back to 1897. The original colonial-era building was completely reimagined in 2000 by the architecture firm Bormida & Yanzón, converted from a bulk-wine producer into a high-end estate built around gravity, not pumps — the winery's gravity-flow platform lets grapes and wine move downward through the process largely untouched by mechanical force. The transformation has been recognized well beyond Mendoza: in 2023, Wine Enthusiast magazine named Antigal its Best Winery of the New World.
The tour's final stop, Bodega Los Toneles, has its own layered history. An Italian immigrant named Dalmacio Armando arrived in Mendoza in 1883 and planted a small vineyard on land in Guaymallén; his family built the winery itself in 1922, in a style that reflects the Industrial Revolution-era architecture of its day. The building later sat empty for two decades before the Millán family bought and restored it in 2002, and in 2008 the province formally declared it Cultural Heritage of Mendoza. Since 2019, under the family's third generation, the restored halls have also doubled as an art gallery showcasing local artists — a tasting room with a second life.
Between the two wineries, the day moves through Maipú itself, the department just south of Mendoza city that's widely regarded as the birthplace of organized Argentine viticulture, with vines cultivated here for centuries and European varieties planted at scale from the mid-19th century on. A stop at a boutique olive grove and a three-course paired lunch at Bodega Manuel Villafañe round out the day, grounding the wine tastings in the region's equally real olive-growing tradition.
