Aconcagua Provincial Park has protected this stretch of the high Andes since 1983, covering somewhere in the range of 65,000 to 71,000 hectares around the mountain itself — at about 6,961 meters (22,838 feet), Aconcagua is the highest peak in the Americas and the highest anywhere outside Asia. Laguna Horcones, the viewpoint this private day is built around, sits inside the park at roughly 2,800 meters, a short walk from the ranger post at Horcones (itself just under 3,000 meters), with a wide, well-marked path that circles the lake and opens up to views of Aconcagua's south face — the mountain's steepest, most dramatic side, and the one most visible from this access road.
This is deliberately a viewing day rather than a mountaineering one — no permits, technical gear, or acclimatization are required, and the roughly two-hour walk around Laguna Horcones stays flat and accessible, making it one of the easiest ways to actually stand inside Aconcagua Provincial Park and see the mountain up close without attempting it.
The day builds outward from there — a coffee-and-croissant stop in Uspallata, the small Andean town on the route between Mendoza and the park, followed by a full traditional Argentine asado with wine and dessert. Asado is Argentina's defining way of cooking meat, slow-grilled over wood or charcoal rather than quickly seared, and treating it as the closing event of a mountain day, rather than a quick roadside lunch, is very much how Argentines themselves tend to mark an occasion.
