Confluencia is a real, working part of Aconcagua's climbing infrastructure — it's the first overnight camp on the mountain's Normal Route, the path used by the large majority of expeditions attempting the summit. Sitting at around 3,400 meters (roughly 11,200 feet), it's reached by a trail of about 10 kilometers from the Horcones ranger station at the park entrance (itself close to 2,950 meters), gaining around 500 meters of elevation along the way — a genuinely different, more demanding proposition than the flat lakeside walk to Laguna Horcones elsewhere in Aconcagua Provincial Park.
Confluencia takes its name from the point where two rivers, the Horcones Superior and Horcones Inferior, meet, and during the main climbing season (roughly November through March) it functions as a real base camp, with expedition tents, a ranger post, and climbers resting or acclimatizing before continuing higher. Reaching it on a day hike gives you a genuine look at what the early stages of an Aconcagua expedition actually involve, rather than just viewing the mountain from a distance.
What sets this specific hike apart is the guide: he also works on Aconcagua's summit expeditions themselves, so the commentary along the trail comes from someone who has actually operated at altitude on this mountain, not just led day tours near it. A separate driver handles the roughly 400-kilometer round trip from Mendoza, so your guide's attention stays on the trail and the mountain rather than the road.
