The Yarra Valley sits in the foothills of the Yarra Ranges, part of Victoria's Great Dividing Range, where cleared vineyard land gives way quickly to genuine native bushland once you climb toward the upper valley. That mix of open vine rows and forested hillsides is part of why the region supports real regional wildlife alongside its wineries, rather than just one or the other.
The river systems running through this area — the Yarra itself and tributaries like the Watts River and Badger Creek near Healesville — are part of the natural range of the platypus in Victoria, and the surrounding forests are home to wallabies, echidnas, kookaburras and, further into the Yarra Ranges, lyrebirds. None of these sightings can be scripted the way a winery visit can, since they depend on wild animals in a wild landscape, but a private full-day pace leaves room to actually slow down at the right spots rather than rush past them between tastings.
