The Yarra Valley is Victoria's oldest wine region, dating back to 1838, when the Ryrie brothers planted the colony's first vines at Yering Station after driving cattle south from Sydney. The property passed to Swiss-born Paul de Castella in 1850, whose brother Hubert later founded St Hubert's vineyard nearby in 1863, while Guillaume de Pury established Yeringberg in the same era — the three names behind much of the valley's early reputation.
That reputation reached its peak in 1889, when a wine from Yering Station became the first and only Southern Hemisphere vineyard ever to win a Grand Prix at the Paris Exhibition. By the turn of the century, plantings in the valley had passed 400 hectares, but the industry collapsed during the Depression, and by 1937 most of the original vineyards had been converted back to grazing land.
The valley's modern revival only began in 1963 with the planting of Wantirna Estate, the first of a new generation of wineries that rebuilt the region from almost nothing. Today it's split into two genuinely distinct wine zones: a lower valley floor around Lilydale, Yarra Glen and Coldstream sitting at 50 to 80 metres, warm enough for cabernet sauvignon and shiraz, and a cooler upper valley at 200 to 430 metres better suited to pinot noir and sparkling base wine. A fully customised, private itinerary is the natural way to move between the two, depending on which style you actually want to taste.
