The land Healesville Sanctuary now sits on carries significant history of its own before the sanctuary existed. Between 1863 and 1924, this area near the Yarra Flats was home to Coranderrk, an Aboriginal station established after Kulin leaders Simon Wonga and William Barak petitioned the colonial governor for land. Within fifteen years Coranderrk had grown into a genuinely thriving community of over 100 Aboriginal residents who built their own homes, ran farms and livestock, and became one of the earliest and most significant sites of Aboriginal political self-advocacy in Victoria, including formal parliamentary inquiries into its management in 1879 and 1881.
The sanctuary itself opened on 30 May 1934, founded by Sir Colin MacKenzie, an Australian anatomist and early advocate for native wildlife protection, who had set up an Institute of Anatomical Research on part of the former Coranderrk land back in 1920. Rather than a conventional zoo, it was built from the outset as a research and conservation institution focused specifically on Australia's own native species.
That research mission produced a genuine world first: in 1943, under the direction of David Fleay, Healesville became the site of the first platypus ever bred successfully in captivity — a milestone matched since then by only one other institution in the world, Sydney's Taronga Zoo. The sanctuary has continued that conservation work in the decades since, which is the real distinction between a visit here and a standard wildlife park.
