The Yarra Valley genuinely does support more than 80 wineries today, and the variety isn't just marketing — pinot noir and chardonnay alone account for roughly three-quarters of the region's total grape harvest by weight, and the valley is widely regarded as producing some of Australia's best cool-climate examples of both, alongside cabernet sauvignon and the less common shiraz viognier blend.
Much of that variety comes down to elevation. The lower valley floor around Lilydale, Yarra Glen and Coldstream sits at only 50 to 80 metres, warm enough for riper reds, while the upper valley climbs to between 200 and 430 metres, cool enough to favour pinot noir and the base wines used for sparkling production. That's a genuinely wide climatic range packed into one touring day, which is why a route that can actually choose among dozens of wineries, rather than visiting the same two or three every operator uses, makes a real difference here.
The valley has also built a real reputation over recent decades for dining to match its wine, with vineyard restaurants pairing local produce against estate wine lists in a style that's become one of the defining features of Australian wine tourism. A private day built around genuine flexibility — both in which wineries you taste at and where you stop for lunch — is the most practical way to make use of a region with this much real depth in it.
