This tour spends its time inside the real forest of Mount Dandenong rather than just looking at it from above. The upper slopes are covered in mountain ash forest — Eucalyptus regnans, one of the tallest flowering plant species on Earth — with a dense, moist understorey of soft tree ferns that only grows where rainfall is high and temperatures stay cool year-round, exactly the conditions the Dandenong Ranges provide this close to Melbourne. It's genuine habitat, home to real native wildlife: crimson rosellas and sulphur-crested cockatoos are common sights and sounds through the canopy, and the Dandenongs are also one of the best-known places in Victoria to listen for the superb lyrebird, famous for mimicking almost any sound it hears.
The bush walk finishes at the summit of Mount Dandenong itself, which at roughly 633 metres is the highest point in the range. The peak was first marked out as a survey point in the 1860s as part of the Victorian geodetic survey — a reminder that long before it became a tourist destination, this was simply the best vantage point available for mapping the colony.
That same vantage point is what makes SkyHigh worth the climb today. The site has drawn sightseers for over a century, and the current SkyHigh precinct — with its restaurant, lookout and television transmission towers — looks out over the forest canopy to Melbourne's skyline and Port Phillip Bay, a genuinely different way to end a morning spent in the bush than simply driving straight to a car park.
