This full-day tour begins with a stop that many visitors don't realise isn't actually on Phillip Island itself: Maru Koala and Animal Park sits in Grantville, on the mainland side of the Westernport Bay crossing, about 15 minutes before you reach the island. It started small — Ruth and George Heffer opened a craft shop called "Maru Craft" on their Grantville property in 1983 (the name blending the first two letters of Marilyn and Ruth's names), and as coach tours heading to Phillip Island began stopping in, the family gradually added animals alongside the crafts. Their son Ian took over and expanded it into the wildlife park it is today, now a genuine family stop en route to the island proper.
From there the day continues to the Nobbies, at Phillip Island's western tip, where a boardwalk leads out over rock stacks formed from basalt lava that erupted roughly 40 to 48 million years ago. Looking out from the viewpoint, you're overlooking Seal Rocks, home to an estimated 16,000 Australian fur seals — the largest fur seal colony in the country, and one most visitors only ever see from a distance across the water.
The day closes, as nearly every Phillip Island visit does, with the genuine Penguin Parade at dusk — the nightly return of the world's largest little penguin colony to their burrows after a day spent fishing. Between the mainland wildlife park, the Nobbies' seal colony, and the Parade itself, it's a real cross-section of what makes this stretch of coast worth the full day.
