About This Tour

A private tour for your group only, real stops at a genuine sheep farm and the Penguin Parade. This is a private tour for your group only. Real stops include a genuine sheep farm demonstration and the Penguin Parade.

Phillip Island's farming history goes back further than most visitors expect. In 1842, brothers John and George McHaffie took up a pastoral lease covering almost the entire island and ran it as grazing land for sheep — effectively the island's first organised European land use. That lease held until the island was opened up for closer settlement in 1868–69, after which the McHaffies retained only the 640 acres around their homestead and the rest of the island was subdivided into smaller farms.

That pastoral character never fully disappeared. Today roughly 60% of Phillip Island is still farmland, much of it given over to grazing sheep and cattle, which is what makes a genuine working farm stop such a natural complement to the island's wildlife attractions — it's agricultural heritage rather than a staged add-on. Seeing sheep shearing or herding against the backdrop of the same paddocks that have been grazed for well over 150 years connects the island's quieter, rural side to the wildlife-park image most visitors arrive with.

The day's other half is the one most people came for regardless: the genuine Penguin Parade, where the little penguins — the world's smallest penguin species — come ashore at dusk to their burrows, part of a colony that is today the largest of its kind anywhere in the world.
