Getting a small group comfortably to Phillip Island and back in a day is easier now than it has been for most of the island's modern history. Phillip Island wasn't connected to the mainland by a permanent crossing until 1940, when a suspension bridge opened between San Remo and Newhaven — a narrow, two-lane structure with no footpaths and strict load limits that forced large coaches to unload their passengers to walk across on foot. That bridge was finally replaced in 1969 by the wider reinforced-concrete bridge still in use today, which is what makes a relaxed day trip by private vehicle genuinely practical rather than a logistical exercise.
In a private luxury vehicle capped at six guests, that comfort compounds: no stranger seated next to you, no waiting on a full coach group, and a pace set entirely by your own group rather than a fixed tour schedule. It's a meaningfully different experience from the large-coach tours that still dominate day trips to the island.
The day's centrepiece is real General Viewing admission to the Penguin Parade, the nightly return of Phillip Island's little penguins — the smallest penguin species in the world — to their burrows after a day fishing at sea. The colony here is the largest of its kind anywhere, drawing more than 600,000 visitors a year, which makes a comfortable, unhurried private vehicle a genuine advantage rather than a luxury for its own sake.
