No — koalas were introduced to Phillip Island from the mainland in the 1870s. The population later collapsed in 1929–31 when their food trees died off, and survivors were moved to nearby islands; the Koala Conservation Reserve, opened in 1992, now protects the koalas that remain.

About This Tour

A private tour for your group only, real Koala Conservation Centre boardwalk and the genuine Penguin Parade, with an optional Cowes dinner. This is a private tour for your group only. Real stops include the Koala Conservation Centre boardwalk and the genuine Penguin Parade, with a real optional Cowes dinner.

One genuinely surprising fact about Phillip Island's koalas is that they aren't actually native to the island — they were introduced from the mainland in the 1870s, and the population thrived well enough to become an early tourist draw in its own right. That success didn't last: by 1929 the manna gum trees the koalas depended on for food had been devastated by insect pests and fire, and the colony collapsed. By 1930–31, the surviving 165 koalas had to be relocated to nearby French Island and Quail Island to save them.

The Koala Conservation Reserve that this tour visits was built to protect what came after. Established in 1991 on former farmland — including mature eucalypts and land donated by the Forrest family of Phillip Island — it opened to the public in 1992, and today its elevated Koala Boardwalk lets you look eye-level into the tree canopy at the reserve's resident koalas, with free-ranging koalas also living in the surrounding woodland.

The day rounds out with the genuine nightly Penguin Parade and, for groups that choose it, a real optional dinner in Cowes, the island's small main town on its northern shore facing Westernport Bay — a relaxed way to close out a day built around two of the island's signature animals.
