It's both, and genuinely so. Queen Victoria Market remains the largest and most intact of Melbourne's 19th-century markets and the largest open-air market in the Southern Hemisphere, still operating as a real, functioning marketplace for locals while also drawing visitors specifically for its historic sheds and the multicultural range of vendors that have built up there since it opened in 1878.

About This Tour

A private tour for your group only, real, genuine multicultural food vendors at Queen Victoria Market. This is a private tour for your group only. Real, genuine multicultural food vendors are visited at Queen Victoria Market.

Queen Victoria Market opened on 20 March 1878 and has grown into the largest and most intact of Melbourne's great 19th-century markets, as well as the largest open-air market anywhere in the Southern Hemisphere — a genuine scale advantage that gives a food tour built around it far more variety to work with than a typical city-centre market would.

Part of the market's footprint has a more sobering history: between 1837 and 1854, the land was Melbourne's first official cemetery, holding an estimated 10,000 early settler burials. Before building work extended onto that ground, 28 remains were formally exhumed and reinterred at Melbourne General Cemetery, including three Aboriginal men who had been executed in the 1840s. The corner of the site where those unconsecrated burials took place is now specifically recognised as an Aboriginal historic place under Victoria's Aboriginal Heritage Act.

Over the nearly 150 years since it opened, the market has become something closer to a living timeline of Melbourne's immigration: as each new wave of arrivals settled in the city — Italian and Greek communities from the postwar decades, later Vietnamese, Chinese, and many others — their produce, delis, and food stalls found a place within its sheds, turning it into a genuine meeting point for cultural traditions from around the world rather than just a place to buy groceries. A vendor-by-vendor tasting tour is really just following that same accumulated history one stall at a time.
