The Mornington Peninsula's modern wine industry is younger than many visitors assume. Although a small wine boom briefly took hold here in the late 1800s, it petered out by the 1920s as growers struggled to ripen grapes for the fortified wines in demand at the time. The region's real turning point came in spring 1972, when Baillieu Myer planted 400 vines at Elgee Park; Main Ridge Estate followed in 1975 and produced the peninsula's first modern commercial vintage in 1980, kicking off the cool-climate pinot noir reputation the area holds today.
The four wineries this tour visits each have their own distinct story. Montalto was established in 1998 by John and Wendy Mitchell, built around a Red Hill South property that already had vines planted back in 1985. Ten Minutes by Tractor takes its name literally — founded in 1999 around three separate Main Ridge vineyards, each roughly a ten-minute tractor ride apart from the others, a naming quirk that's stuck as the estate grew into an anchor cellar door with a two-hatted restaurant. Trofeo Estate, the youngest of the group, was founded in 2012 by Jim and Kath Manolios inside a converted 1930s passionfruit cannery in the foothills of Red Hill, and has built its reputation on ageing wine in terracotta amphorae imported from Tuscany — a method that makes it the largest producer of terracotta-aged wine in the Southern Hemisphere.
Rounding out the day, Point Leo Estate pairs its cool-climate vineyard with a genuinely significant 16-acre Sculpture Park, home to more than 50 large-scale works from Australian and international artists set against views over Western Port Bay — a real art collection, not a decorative afterthought, alongside the wine.
