Moonlit Sanctuary began as one person's long-held idea rather than a commercial venture. Founder Michael Johnson, inspired by British naturalist Gerald Durrell, travelled to the Durrell Foundation's conservation academy in Jersey in 1996 to study endangered-species breeding before coming home to build it himself. The Johnson family bought a 25-acre former farm and pony club property in Pearcedale, on the Mornington Peninsula, and began construction in December 1998 — a visitor centre, a two-acre wetland habitat with its own lake, and more than 30 animal enclosures. When it opened in September 2001, it started out running only lantern-lit night tours of nocturnal wildlife, only adding daytime visits from 2007 onward as it grew.
With the group explicitly capped at just 4 travellers, this is a genuinely intimate way to experience that same wildlife park, with far more one-on-one time with native species than a larger coach group would allow.
The day also takes in Arthurs Seat, the peninsula's highest point at 314 metres, which the local Boonwurrung people knew as Wongo before European explorer Lieutenant John Murray renamed it in 1802 after its namesake hill in Edinburgh, Scotland — and, rounding out the beach side of the day, a stop at Brighton and Dendy Beach, with a picnic lunch at Arthurs Seat's summit taking in views that, on a clear day, stretch all the way to the Melbourne skyline.
