Peninsula Hot Springs has a real origin story worth knowing before you go. Co-founder Charles Davidson visited Japan in 1992 and came home wanting to bring a similar tradition of outdoor geothermal bathing to Australia, centring his plans on hot springs that had actually been discovered on the Mornington Peninsula back in 1979. It took years of planning before the venue opened in 1997, and it wasn't until early 2002 — after 18 months of drilling with his brother and business partner Richard — that the Davidsons finally struck a genuine underground spring, 637 metres down, which erupted with natural geothermal mineral water at 54 degrees Celsius. What started as a single bathing area has since grown into more than 50 different bathing experiences, from open-air pools to saunas and Moroccan-style hammams.
The wine side of the day draws on two real, well-established Mornington Peninsula estates. Paringa Estate was started in 1984 by Lindsay McCall, who was still working as a school teacher when he bought an old orchard and began planting — it took until 1990 to finish the home vineyard, with the first vintage released in 1988. Point Leo Estate, meanwhile, pairs its cool-climate wines with a genuinely significant art collection: its 16-acre Sculpture Park, established in 2017, now holds more than 50 large-scale works from Australian and international artists, including Inge King, Jaume Plensa, and Tony Cragg, set among the vines with ocean views over Western Port Bay.
Together, a real geothermal spa with its own improbable discovery story and two genuinely distinct wine estates make for a day that covers far more ground than either alone could.
