Harley-Davidson has been building three-wheeled machines almost as long as it has been making motorcycles. Its very first trike, the Forecar, hit the road in 1913 with a configuration the reverse of today's — two wheels and a cargo box up front, a single wheel at the rear. The model that really stuck was the Servi-Car, produced from 1932 all the way through to 1973 and built around a durable flathead engine; it was also the first Harley-Davidson ever fitted with an electric starter, a full three decades before that feature reached the company's two-wheeled Electra Glide. For roughly 35 years after the Servi-Car ended production, the only Harley trikes on the road were aftermarket conversions, until the factory-built Tri Glide Ultra Classic arrived in 2009, based on the Electra Glide Ultra Classic touring motorcycle and built through a 2008 partnership with trike manufacturer Lehman Trikes.
Riding through Melbourne on a genuine Harley trike puts you in the middle of a city whose streets carry their own real history. Surveyor Robert Hoddle laid out Melbourne's central grid in 1837, and the gold rush of the 1850s and 1860s briefly turned the city into one of the wealthiest in the world, funding the grand Victorian-era streetscapes and the service laneways behind them that have since become some of Melbourne's best-loved cafe and street-art strips.
A trike delivers that experience in a genuinely different way from a car or coach tour — it's open-air, with the sound and feel of a real Harley-Davidson engine, but ridden by your driver on a stable three-wheeled platform, so it doesn't require any riding experience or license of your own to enjoy.
