The Twelve Apostles' name is one of the Great Ocean Road's best-known pieces of marketing spin. The limestone stacks were originally called the Sow and Piglets — with nearby Muttonbird Island cast as the sow — and never numbered more than around nine at any point in their history. Tourism authorities renamed the formation in the 1950s to something more evocative, and the name stuck even though a true dozen never actually stood there together. Today only seven of the stacks remain upright, the rest lost to the same wave action that carved them from the mainland in the first place.
A little further along the coast, London Bridge tells an even more dramatic story of that erosion in action. Until January 1990 it was a genuine double-span natural arch connecting to the mainland; on the evening of 15 January that year, the inner span collapsed without warning, leaving two tourists stranded on what had suddenly become an isolated rock island, cut off by about 100 metres of open surf. They were winched to safety by a police helicopter about an hour later, unharmed, and the formation was renamed London Arch to reflect what was left of it. It's one of the clearest reminders along this route that the coastline is still actively changing, not a fixed postcard image.
Travelling this route in a private Mercedes-Benz V-Class with your own guide means the day runs at your own pace rather than a coach timetable — stopping longer at a lookout that catches your interest, or moving on quickly from one that doesn't, with no other travellers to accommodate along the way.
