A guide's fifteen years of leading walks through central Melbourne isn't just a number on a tour listing — it's the difference between reciting a script and actually knowing a city's back streets, opening hours, and quiet corners well enough to adapt a route on the fly. That kind of accumulated, hyper-local knowledge is exactly what this private tour is built around, rather than any fixed, one-size-fits-all itinerary.
Old Melbourne Gaol, one of the tour's real stops, is as grim and well-documented as Melbourne history gets. Construction began in 1839, and the gaol operated as a working prison from 1845 until 1924, during which time 133 people were executed there by hanging. Its most famous prisoner was the bushranger Ned Kelly, held in cell 113 after his conviction for murder and hanged on 11 November 1880. When the gaol finally closed in 1924, part of the site was absorbed into what is now RMIT University, while the remainder became a museum that still displays the death masks taken of its executed prisoners.
Block Arcade, the tour's other confirmed stop, opened in 1892–93 and remains Melbourne's grandest Victorian-era shopping arcade, modelled directly on Milan's Galleria Vittorio Emanuele II. It's a showcase of the wealth and confidence of Melbourne's 1880s land boom — the same speculative property frenzy, sometimes nicknamed 'Marvellous Melbourne,' that financed much of the ornate architecture still standing across the inner city today.
