About This Tour

A private downtown deep-dive covering Fernando Botero's sculptures, the neo-Gothic Palacio de la Cultura Rafael Uribe Uribe, historic Salon Malaga, a ride on the Metrocable, a traditional fruit market, and a visit to the House of Memory Museum. This tour goes deeper than a standard highlights loop, pairing Medellin's public art and architecture with the House of Memory Museum, which documents the real impact of Colombia's armed conflict on the city and its people, presented factually and respectfully.

The Palacio de la Cultura Rafael Uribe Uribe is the downtown building that most visitors walk past. Designed by Belgian architect Agustín Goovaerts in a Gothic Revival style, it was under construction from 1925 to 1937, with steel structural elements imported from Belgium, and its black-and-white masonry is unlike anything else in the city. Originally the seat of the Antioquia government, it was renamed in 1987 for the general and politician Rafael Uribe Uribe.

Salón Málaga, a piano bar operating since 1957 according to most accounts, is a small time capsule of mid-century Medellín, and the fruit market and Metrocable ride add the everyday city to the art-and-architecture side of the day.

The House of Memory Museum was created in 2006 on the initiative of the city's victims-attention unit, to help the city understand and move beyond the armed conflict and other violence that has affected Medellín, Antioquia and Colombia. It is a documentary and testimonial museum, not a spectacle, and it is the reason this tour carries more weight than a standard highlights loop.
