El Retiro is a small Antioquian town in the eastern highlands. Its official foundation is often given as 1790, with municipal status in 1814, though earlier settlement dates to the 1730s, when families began working local mines and pastures, a history that included enslaved labor. The town's plaza, church and colonial-style streets are why it is a favorite weekend stop for residents of Medellín.
The Salto de Tequendamita waterfall lies a few kilometres from town on the road toward La Ceja and drops around 20 metres, according to published descriptions.
Compared with the standard Guatapé route, this tour adds the quieter highland towns and a waterfall, so you see more of the countryside than the reservoir and rock alone.
