About This Tour
A private 4-hour cultural tour centered on Fernando Botero's 'Boterismo' style, visiting the Museum of Antioquia's permanent Botero collection, Plaza Botero, and the 'Birds of Peace' sculpture. A focused, art-driven half-day for travelers who want more depth on Fernando Botero specifically, rather than a general city overview. Includes museum entrance fees and a private vehicle throughout.
The Museo de Antioquia occupies the city's former Municipal Palace, and its new headquarters were inaugurated on 14 October 2000 together with the Botero donation to the city. In that gift Botero gave the museum 114 of his own works, drawings, paintings and sculptures, along with 32 works by other international artists, which is why a museum in Medellín holds one of the most important Botero collections anywhere.
The 'Birds of Peace' stand a short walk away in Parque San Antonio. The original bronze bird was destroyed in a bomb attack on 10 June 1995 during an outdoor concert, which killed 23 people according to most accounts and injured many more. Botero insisted the damaged sculpture stay in place as a memorial, and in 2000 he donated an identical undamaged bird to stand beside it. Your guide will tell this story plainly; it is part of why the pair matters to residents.
Boterismo, the artist's signature habit of exaggerated volume, reads very differently once you have seen both the museum paintings and the public bronzes outside.
