Isla de Venados covers about 54 hectares and is named for its two hills, said to resemble a deer's ears. It is roughly 1.8 km long, up to about 178 m high, and sits only about 600 m off the Mazatlán coast. The side facing the city has a calm beach; the outer side meets rough Pacific swell.
The island is an ecological reserve, and visitors are expected to carry out all trash they generate. Sources describe the sheltered shore as good for snorkeling and paddle sports.
