Fires were lit on Cerro del Crestón from 1828, and El Faro was built in 1879 with an oil lamp and Fresnel lens. It was upgraded in 1905 and electrified in 1933. Its light is reported to reach about 30 nautical miles.
The cathedral basilica took from 1856 to 1899 to complete, was interrupted by the French intervention, and is described as neo-baroque with three naves and an octagonal dome.
Mercado Pino Suárez and Plazuela Machado complete the old-port picture: a working market, and a plaza beside the Teatro Ángela Peralta, which opened in 1874.
