El Faro sits on Cerro del Crestón, a hill commonly given as about 515 feet above the sea. Sources describe it as one of the highest lighthouses in the world and second only to Gibraltar's by some rankings, though figures vary. Fires were lit on the hill from 1828, the lighthouse was built in 1879, and electric light replaced earlier lamps in 1933.
The lighthouse building itself is small; the draw is the elevation and the view over the harbor and open Pacific. Because the tour is private for up to six, the timing can be fitted around other stops.
Plazuela Machado and the Teatro Ángela Peralta nearby tell the older story of the port. The theater opened in 1874 and was revived by local citizens in the late 1980s after years of decay.
