The Olas Altas cliff divers are a long-running local tradition. Sources trace diving from the Malecón platform near Olas Altas beach to the mid-twentieth century, with Mario González Aguilar reputedly making the first jump on a bet. The platform is roughly 50 feet high above shallow water, which is why the divers time each jump to the swell.
Plazuela Machado anchors the historic center, and beside it stands the Teatro Ángela Peralta. The theater was built between 1869 and 1874 and opened on 15 February 1874 as Teatro Rubio. Its later name honors the Mexican soprano Ángela Peralta, who performed there in 1883 and died of yellow fever days after arriving in port.
Mercado Pino Suárez, the municipal market, is a working food market with hundreds of stalls selling produce, fish, meat and spices, so a stop there shows daily Mazatlán life rather than a staged attraction.
