The Prado's own building has a backstory most visitors never hear: King Carlos III originally commissioned it in 1785 as a natural science cabinet, designed by the neoclassical architect Juan de Villanueva — it wasn't completed until 1819, by which point the royal family had decided to use it instead to display the art Spanish royalty had been collecting since the 16th century. An official guide with a decade or more of accreditation tends to know exactly this kind of detail, and more usefully, knows which of the museum's galleries get crowded fastest and how to route around them.
The Royal Palace half of the day tells a parallel royal story. It replaced the old Alcázar fortress, destroyed by a four-day fire that began on Christmas Eve 1734, and took twenty years to build (1735–1755) under architects Filippo Juvarra and Giovanni Battista Sacchetti. The result — more than 3,418 rooms across upwards of 135,000 square metres — makes it, by floor area, the largest functioning royal palace in Western Europe, even though the Spanish Royal Family has long since moved to the smaller Palacio de la Zarzuela and uses this building mainly for state ceremonies.
What separates a VIP-style version of this combination from a standard one isn't the sites themselves — it's having a guide experienced enough to read a crowd in real time and adjust the route accordingly, paired with hotel pickup and transfers that remove the two biggest sources of friction (getting across central Madrid, and finding each building's actual entrance) from what's already a packed single day.
