Madrid's status as Spain's capital is more recent, and more arbitrary, than most visitors assume. King Philip II declared it the capital in 1561, moving the royal court from Toledo — a genuinely surprising choice at the time, since Madrid in the 16th century had no navigable river for trade, no coastline, and relatively little existing development compared to other Spanish cities. There's no surviving official document explaining exactly why Philip chose it, though its central geographic location within the Iberian Peninsula is generally cited as the main practical reason.
The decision transformed the city almost overnight: Madrid's population jumped from roughly 18,000 residents in 1561 to around 80,000 by 1598, and the decades that followed are generally considered the start of the city's own Golden Age. A single comprehensive day in Madrid, in other words, is really a day moving through nearly 500 years of deliberate, sometimes accidental, urban growth — from that abrupt 1561 founding moment through to the early-20th-century ambition of avenues like Gran Vía.
Covering that much ground honestly in one day is exactly what having both a dedicated guide and a driver is for — it removes the logistics of getting between distant neighbourhoods so the day can actually be shaped around your own interests and pace rather than a fixed, one-size-fits-all walking route.
