Retiro Park's roots go back to the 1630s, when the Count-Duke of Olivares gave the land to King Philip IV between 1631 and 1640 as the garden for his Buen Retiro Palace. The park's great lake was dug between 1634 and 1636 specifically to host royal water spectacles and boat processions — making the water you'll glide past on this tour nearly four centuries old in its original form, even though the palace itself and most of its original buildings are long gone.
That depth of history is part of why UNESCO added Retiro Park to its World Heritage list in 2021, as part of a combined site that also includes the nearby Paseo del Prado — recognizing the park and avenue together as a landscape dedicated to the arts and sciences. It's a genuinely significant designation, and one most visitors walking through on foot never realize the ground beneath them carries.
The park's other headline feature, the Palacio de Cristal (Crystal Palace), is more recent: architect Ricardo Velázquez Bosco built it in 1887 for a flora exhibition, taking direct inspiration from Joseph Paxton's 1851 Crystal Palace in London's Hyde Park. It now belongs to Madrid's Reina Sofía museum and hosts rotating contemporary art exhibitions inside its original glass-and-iron frame. Add in the park's oldest tree, which dates to the 17th century, and a private Segway route gives you time to actually stop at each of these rather than rushing past them on a shared itinerary.
