Pairing the Royal Palace with the Prado in a single day isn't just a logistics shortcut — the two buildings are genuinely linked by history. Much of what now hangs in the Prado was, for centuries, simply the private art collection of the Spanish Crown, displayed across its various royal residences rather than in a public museum. Only when the Prado opened in 1819 did that royal collection, built up since the time of Charles V in the 16th century, finally move into a dedicated building of its own — so a day that starts in the palace itself and ends among the paintings the monarchy once hung on its own walls is tracing a real thread through Spanish royal history, not just two unrelated highlights.
The Royal Palace itself replaced the old Alcázar fortress after a devastating 1734 fire, with construction running from 1735 to 1755 — the result is more than 3,000 rooms spread across upwards of 135,000 square metres, making it, by floor area, the largest functioning royal palace in Western Europe. The Prado, by contrast, holds a much more concentrated collection in a single neoclassical building, with Velázquez's Las Meninas and Goya's full body of work as its best-known anchors.
With private transfers handling the gap between the two sites, the only real decision left is sequencing — starting with the palace's grand state rooms while the morning light is best for photography, or opening with the Prado while your energy for close looking at paintings is freshest, then letting the palace's scale carry you through the afternoon instead.
