The Prado's claim to one of the world's great art collections rests partly on sheer range, and Hieronymus Bosch's 'The Garden of Earthly Delights' is a good example of why — this surreal, three-panel triptych has been housed at the Prado since 1933, when it was sent over from the Escorial monastery for restoration, and the museum now holds the largest and most important collection of Bosch's work found anywhere in the world.
El Greco, Titian, and Rubens round out the museum's other major pillars, each representing a different chapter of how Spanish royal collecting shaped what ended up here: El Greco's intensely personal, elongated figures from his years working in Toledo, Titian's Venetian portraits commissioned directly by the Spanish Habsburgs, and Rubens' large-scale mythological and religious scenes, many painted for the Spanish court itself.
Keeping the group to a maximum of seven people is a real, practical choice rather than a marketing line — it's genuinely difficult to see fine brushwork or hear detailed commentary on a painting like Las Meninas or the Black Paintings in a crowd, and a small group with skip-the-line tickets means more time actually looking at the art rather than waiting to get close to it.
