Velázquez's 'Las Meninas,' painted in 1656, is usually the single work visitors most want to stand in front of at the Prado, and it earns that reputation honestly — it's one of the most analyzed paintings in the history of Western art, largely because of its strange, layered composition, which places the viewer in an ambiguous position somewhere between subject and observer. Velázquez set the scene in his own studio inside Philip IV's royal palace, the Alcázar, and painted himself into it, brush in hand, working on a canvas the viewer can never quite see.
A skip-the-line private guide is especially valuable in front of a painting like this one, since the gallery it hangs in is consistently one of the busiest rooms in the entire museum — having a guide who can talk you through the composition while you're actually standing close to the canvas is a very different experience than viewing it from several rows back.
Extending the day with a guided walk through nearby Retiro Park afterward connects naturally to the Prado visit: the park sits right alongside the museum along the Paseo del Prado, and like the museum, it traces back to Spain's royal collecting and leisure traditions — it began as the private grounds of a 17th-century royal palace before finally opening to the public in 1868.
