About This Tour

A private guided tour of the Prado Museum's most important pieces, followed by a stroll through nearby Retiro Park. Your local guide walks you through the Prado, making sure you don't miss the most important pieces, then takes you for a stroll in the nearby Retiro Park.

Retiro Park began life in the 1630s not as public green space but as a private royal retreat — a palace and pleasure gardens built for King Philip IV, offered to him by an ambitious court favorite angling for royal favor. Most of that original palace complex was destroyed during the Napoleonic Wars in the early 19th century, and what survived passed out of royal hands entirely after Spain's 1868 revolution, when the park was finally opened to the public for good.

The park's best-known landmark, the Palacio de Cristal (Crystal Palace), dates from considerably later — it was designed by architect Ricardo Velázquez Bosco in 1887, built as a glass-and-iron greenhouse explicitly inspired by London's own Crystal Palace, originally to showcase exotic flora from the Philippines at a colonial exhibition. Today its reflecting pool and glass walls make it one of the most photographed single structures in Madrid, a world away from its original, more utilitarian purpose.

Because Retiro Park sits directly against the Prado's eastern edge, the two make a natural pairing without any real transit time lost between them — a morning spent close-looking at centuries of Spanish painting followed by an unhurried walk through 125 hectares of the very same gardens Spanish royalty once kept to themselves.
